Alana Evans
Alana Evans and the work of representation
Her guild work brings a different set of responsibilities: helping colleagues, explaining workplace concerns and keeping a conversation open across the industry.
Learning through helping
Evans has described involvement with the guild since its formation in 2016. In her 2019 interview, she discussed helping performers with health-insurance enrollment and working alongside state legislators on working conditions.
She said the experience had changed how she engaged with peers. The satisfaction of helping someone who needed support was a central reason for continuing the work.
Pay, payroll and health costs
In her 2017 NPR interview, Evans described goals familiar to workers in many professions: more consistent wages, a uniform payroll system and a way to contribute to Social Security. She also wanted production companies to share health-testing costs that performers were carrying themselves.
She also spoke about resistance to organizing and the task of explaining why performers needed workplace protections. For Evans, safety and practical employment benefits were central to recognizing performing as work.
Bringing performers into the discussion
In her statement for the Free Speech Coalition’s 2023–24 board election, Evans described two years of work on its legislative committee. She was running to bring performers’ experiences into the coalition’s decisions, drawing on her work organizing, listening to colleagues and advocating for their concerns.
The statement highlighted banking and social-media discrimination as areas she had been addressing. She wanted to continue that work through board service. Alongside helping individual performers, this part of her advocacy involved institutions that could affect how people worked, communicated and received payment.
